Hi Guys

Hoping someone may be able to help me. I have a Sapphire Vapor-X R9 280X 3G D5 which I have had for a few years (outside of warranty :( ) and I suspect the card is bad, but not sure. Symptoms are the system hanging initially, then after boot, vertical lines displaying after windows loads, then on restart, vertical lines at log in screen. A re-install of windows and graphics drivers had the same thing happen, though sometimes the system boots ok to the desktop, then vertical lines again. I've tried installing old drivers and the same issue occurs. So that points to the hardware of the card I'm thinking, except the system is fine if I don't install the drivers and use the windows default. Note, the display out is still through the same graphics card and don't have any other display out on the motherboard, which ti me is odd, so then points back to the drivers, but even old drivers give me the issue. Can't play games, but no vertical lines. Have also tried removing the card, vacuuming and re-seating. Don't have another card or system to try unfortunately. The only other thing I haven't tried is putting the card in the other mobo slot....

Any help or advice is appreciated. Not a lot on the web that I could find except faulty card.....

Thanks in advance

Hi Monopoly21,

That's very strange. I would say this is more likely to be hardware related but as this is out of warranty, it definitely wouldn't hurt to try a few more troubleshooting steps. I would recommend to try another monitor and a new display cable if possible. Also, thinking about the fact that it does not occur until installing any gpu driver, this makes me think that it may be an issue relating to temperature as prior to installing the driver, it won't be utilizing the card to its full potential and therefore not getting hot enough. Try to check the fan/thermal paste on the graphics card to verify whether this is the cause or not.

I do think that it is a faulty card but it wouldn't hurt to try these steps as well as changing the PCIe slot it is in on the motherboard as you have mentioned.

Regards,
Cameron

Thanks for the advice.

I didn't mention sorry, that I have tried another monitor and a DVI output instead of HDMI with the same result. All fans are spinning on the card, but will take a look at the thermal paste and see what I can find as well as the other mobo slot.

Cheers :)
