Hey guys
It's been 5 years since my last cpu/mb/ram upgrade and i've finally got a bit of cash to spare!
Current specs:
Win 10 pro / Arch linux
Intel i7 3770 @ 3.4ghz ivy bridge
2 x 4GB mushkin DDR3 ram
Asus P877-V
Asus Strix GTX 970 4GB
2 X 24" monitors 3840x1200
540GB Intel SSD plus a couple Sata drives
Fractal Design R5 case
Corsair psu 650w??
I'm looking at doing cpu/mb/ram/cooler
Budget is $1500 - $1700
I always try to get the best stuff I can afford as I don't get a chance to upgrade often. I'd like to start to move towards a large single monitor 4k setup so getting a good base to build on is important i guess.
My current direction is a...
Intel i7 8700k
Asus ROG strix Z370-E or a Gigabyte GA-Z370 AORUS Gaming 7
2 x 8gb ram or 2 x 16gb?- unsure of what to get but would like to get the best for my budget and possible dependant on cooler size ie. low profile
Noctua NH-D15
I'm open to any and all suggestions. My main OS is Arch linux and windows is mainly for games which I play a little bit. I also do a bit of video encoding and graphics stuff.

Morning Hetch6, I have quoted up an upgrade bundle for you with 32GB of RAM as it fit within your budget. I would say the RAM is overkill for now but if you don't upgrade too regularly I can't predict if you will need 32GB in five years time so it may be worth it as atleast you won't have to worry about your RAM. let me know your thoughts on the below quote.

Thanks for the Quote Thomas and I hear what you're saying about the Ram - 32gb does seem overkill at the moment but it probably won't be long before it's the 'norm'.
I'm very keen, but have a few questions.
I noticed the Corsair CMU32GX4M2C3000C15B Vengeance 32GB (2 x 16GB) DDR4-3000 CL15 Blue Led are on special. would that be a better option as obviously its cheaper and has a slightly higher clock speed?
The other thing I'm concerned about is the size of the cooler and it's ability to clear the height of the ram. The m/b compatability chart on the noctua site doesn't mention anything but it would be nice to be sure!
I'm also tempted to drop the ram back to 16gb and pick up a 250gb/500gb M.2 nVMe SSD.....decisions, decisions. I don't know how much of an advantage one would be over my current 2.5" ssd.

Morning Hetch6, I must admit you are in a semi-difficult position. The M.2 SSDs are roughly five times faster which does improve system boot times and general snappiness of your system. I have quoted up the 16GB option with a 250Gb 960 Evo SSD, I only did this to keep the quoted price as similar as possible as in the long run I would recommend going for the 500GB version. Ram is fairly easy to add late on down the track if you ever need it so I have quoted a 2 x 8GB kit.

Hey Thomas I had planned on using the M.2 for one OS and using my other SSD for the other as they currently both dual boot from the same SSD. But I think it may be best to hold off on buying one until I can afford a bigger one. So to that end, can you supply me with 2 last quotes. One without the SSD and the current 16GB of ram, and one without the SSD and with the 32GB that's currently on sale (which ends today!) http://www.computerlounge.co.nz/components/componentview.asp?partid=28854And just double checking the cooler will clear the ram height? Morning Hetch6, Please have a look at the below two quotes and let me know which you prefer. I had to change the RAM as unfortunately it was a while stocks last sale and we sold out a day or so ago. I have instead quoted you Corsair RGB as cost wise it was very similar as it is an older batch of RAM (pricing is steadily increasing) 16Gb quote  32Gb quote

Hi Thomas
I'm still sitting on the fence with this one. I've taken a step back and kinda thought about what I use the PC for these days. I don't intend to overclock - which is funny when all the gear I've chosen is probably designed for overlclocking! I guess the reason I choose that gear was because I think the overclocking/high end gear is generally made a bit better with better components...would you agree?
At the end of the day I'm after the best I can get for the money - a fast, stable system that will see me right for the next 3-5 years.
I shall ponder away an make a call shortly unless of course you have any other suggestions.

Honestly for now 16Gb is fine for the majority of resolutions and workloads, it really depends on what happens down the line.
32GB is great future proofing as I doubt games will be able to utilise that quantity for a few years after that is anyone's guess.
Personally, I would go with 16Gb of RAM and a 250Gb M.2 as RAM is easy enough to add on down the line.

Hey Thomas,
Thanks for your thoughts. Im 99% there, but really want to know if I can afford the jump to the 500GB samsung m.2 as I think i'll struggle with the size of the 250GB and I don't want to be left disappointed. Do you think you can work some pricing magic and let me know what the damage would be all up?
What would the time frame be on delivery? and what would the delivery charge be to Albany, Auckland.

The Lowest Price I could do on the 960 EVO 500Gb would be an additional $415 on either the 16Gb or 32GB option (which I will need to look into as RAM pricing is still going crazy)
